Electronic Book, Kindle 2, Review

If the Kindle 2 succeeds on its current terms, and all signs suggest it’ll be a blockbuster (thanks Oprah !) , Amazon will make a bund le. Amazon’s reader is a brilliant device that shanghais book buyers and the book industry into accepting a radically diminished marketplace for published works.  But everyone else with a stake in a vibrant book industry—authors, publishers, libraries, chain bookstores, indie bookstores, and, not least, readers—stands to lose out.

Think how easy it is to buy books on your Kindle wireless reading  device. Just press a button to take you to Amazon’s store, type in a title or author, and press buy.  In about 10 seconds, the book’s yours.  Everything is simply automated.  When you buy the Kindle 2, Electronic book, Amazon pre-syncs your reader with your account info, so there’s no need to type in a credit car number or billing address, they already have it.

There’s no need to connect the Kindle Wireless Reading Device to your computer, either, it comes with free, built-in cellular Internet access that lets you buy books from just about anywhere.  In addition, Kindle books are cheap, the majority selling for $9.99 or less.

As a result, as Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos told investors last month , Electronic Book owners are voracious book buyers.  According to the company’s stats, when people get a Kindle 2, they keep buying the same number of physical books as they did before -and they buy nearly twice as many Electronic book as paper books.

You are not able to resell or share your books. Everything you buy is attached to your Amazon Account, only readable on the Kindle wireless reading device or any other devices that Amazon may one day deem appropriate. You can buy books for your Kindle only from Amazon’s store.  In Fact, the only thing you can read on the Kindle 2 must first be routed through the Amazon Store first.  You may surf the Web on the Kindle 2, and you can convert some of your personal Microsoft Word or text files to the Kindle, but doing so is slow and not very reliable.  In order to do some of the other things, such as read blogs, newspapers, magazines and books, you’ve got to go through Amazon’s Store First

Electronic book owners buy a lot of stuff, and the more stuff they buy, the more likely they are to stick with the Kindle 2 in the future, even when/if someone else invents a better, more open E lectronic book service. This restriction makes Amazon the prime market for book publishers. How can they resist giving over their entire catalog to a store that attracts so many eager, captive shoppers? Publishers’ acquiescence in turn increases the Kindle’s appeal to new buyers. If you’re in the market for an electronic book, you’ll probably choose the one that offers the most books, and that means Kindle . (At the moment, there are about 240,000 titles available for the Kindle ; the Sony Reader, its closest rival, has fewer than 100,000.) Taken together, these trends all point in one direction— Amazon will come to rule the market for electronic  books. And as the master of the electronic  book universe, Amazon will eventually call the shots on pricing, marketing, and everything else associated with the new medium.

Kindle 2 at Amazon is not the first owner to impose restrictions on users.

–Ipod – Until Recently – if you wanted to legally download a broad range of major-label music, you had to buy it from Apple.

–Video games – You can’t play just any game on your XBox.  You can play on the games that have
been approved and licensed by Microsoft.

–IPhone, lets you buy music wirelessly – as long as you buiy it from Apple.  The iPhone lets you add
new programs , though only the programs that Apple approves.

Review of the Kindle 2, Electronic Book,  by Lois Theiler Henry —  Oklahoma City

  • I have had my Kindle 2for 2 days and noted several improvements that I love.
  • - Keyboard is much smaller and less obtrusive.
  • -Back Cover is not easily removable and won’t slip
  • -Power management is so much better.
  • -On/Off and wireless on/off are gone.  You have a small switch at the top that handle sleep

electronic book

  • -The entire navigation structure has been revised for the better
  • -Acceleration of the cursor, looking upwords, typing text, highlighting text.
  • -New power cable
  • -Navigation is a huge improvement.
  • -Moving the cursor to a word and having the definition of the word immediately pop up on the bottom of the screen is terrific.
  • -Using the rocker to move between articles in a newspaper makes scanning the paper much faster and enjoyable.
  • -Calling up the Menu strip is much faster and interactive.
  • -The button hinges are on the outside, at the edge
  • -Size, the Kindle 2 i s thinner than the iphone
  • -Network Speed: The Kindle 2 can use G3 cellphone connections and when it’s activated it makes a considerable difference in interactivity to the Kindle Store and when downloading Archived content.
  • -The new interface in Kindle 2 is annoying and makes the feature much less useful. I’ll be writing to Amazon to see if we can get that changed.
  • The Kindle 2 is a big refinement over the K1. It feels as easy to read as the Kindle 1 but doesn’t seem any crisper to my eyes (I usually read at point sizes 3 & 4). In this regard, as a book, the Kindle 1 and Kindle 2 are comparable. I wouldn’t run up my credit card to buy the Kindle 2 from a belief that it’s fundamentally easier to read. However, in my short time with the Kindle 2 it’s a more enjoyable device to use. The change in the hinging and size of the buttons is major plus and would make it hard to go back to the Kindle 1. Amazon broke a few paradigms that K1 users are accustomed to and I found myself going to the Kindle 2 User Guide to figure out some content management issues that have been changed in this release.

Review of the Electronic Book, Kindle 2 by Harry Thompson

The Kindle 2 arrived about an hour before I left for a class and I took it with me intending to explore the Kindle 2 during the break. I arrived at class early and with the extra time started familiarizing myself with the new device.

I didn’t have it out for more than ten seconds before someone asked, “Is that the new Kindle?” Another, “Is that the one that talks?” All seven classmates were keenly interested in this second generation Kindle, and all had heard of it – the Kindle 2, that is, not just the Kindle. They all knew that a second had been unveiled, and at least one wasn’t aware of the first until they became aware of the second. Class started, and I had to put the new Kindle away.

During the time I was changing classes, I decided to try again.  While I understand that there’s been a good deal of time for word-of-mouth to advertise the Kindle, there’s something else at work here. This device has caught people’s attention; it’s a head turner. The design is slick, attractive, thin and, I would say, sexy! That it doesn’t have the quirky, clunky, annoying buttons that filled ¾ of each side of its predecessor, buttons that caused dozens upon dozens of accidental page turns makes it that much sexier. I found that the Kindle 2 is immediately appealing to the eye and once described in the barest of terms people want one for themselves. And I mean everyone. Every single person that has seen my Kindle and heard my thirty-second advertisement of its features has expressed a desire to own one NOW. That wasn’t the reaction the first Kindle had, and my thirty-second advertisement was roughly the same.

My review of the Kindle 2 has been amazing, Congratulations, Amazon. You’ve just invented the equivalent of the iPhone for electronic book

When you bring up a menu, note that the top banner changes to display extra status information: the amount of free Flash memory, the time (hurrah!), and the quality of wireless connection .
