I researched the purchase of a Kindle for a long time. I could not decide whether it was worth buying a dedicated e-reader. Boy am I glad I made this purchase. The downside to Amazon’s online sales of Kindle 3 is that customers do not get to see it in person. It is much better in person. This may sound stupid but when I got my new Kindle, I thought there was a solid-on overlay on the screen contains a diagram of the device buttons, etc. I actually tried to peel it off. Doh! E-ink on this unit is so good. I did not know that I stared at the current screen. I did not realize that no power is required until the display changes. (And thus the great battery life) I have a lot of reading, but faced the prospect of reading less or purchase large print books because of my variable and deteriorating eyesight. The new Kindle has been a godsend. Now I can choose the size of type you need depending on my level of fatigue among other things. The weight and ergonomics are very good. For someone like me with neuropathy in his hands, it is extremely easy to administer and enjoyable to own. For me it is easier to read than printed books.

The ease of navigation is great as it is speed. Battery life, so now has been extraordinary. It can be easily connected to our home Wi-Fi, which by design does not broadcast an SSID. It retrieves books so quickly that I almost thought they were not completely received. I did not buy the 3G version because of price difference and the fact that there is no coverage where I live. If you’re constantly traveling, I can not see the need to spend the extra bucks, but it is a matter of personal choice. For those who do not have Wi-Fi at home, remember that you can always download the material to your computer and transfer it via USB. Just today I was watching a interview with Tony Blair on TV. He talked about his new book that sounded interesting. I picked up the Kindle and downloaded a free trial before the interview was over. I’ve only read the preface yet, but will probably buy the book. Now that’s a great way to buy a book! I have not used online browsing extensively yet, but finds it reasonable, what device is. This is primarily a book reader, not a laptop or notebook. They are good at what they do but can not match the e-ink display, or the light weight. For those of you worry about waiting for the new Kindle, let me finish, “It’s worth waiting for” this new Kindle is about the quality of the experience. There are many formatting options for electronic reading. To get the best experience, go with Kindle.

Kindle is my first e-ink reader. I own an iPad, an iPhone and have owned a Windows-based phone in the past that I used as an ereader.

The good:

I would honestly rather read linear (read from page one to the end, one page at a time) from the fiction than a book because I can not always get comfortable with a book. Hard Covers are sometimes a bit heavy and paperbacks do not always lie open easily.Kindle is extremely light and thin. I can hold it in one hand easily. The page turn buttons are conveniently located. Page-turns are not immediate, but they are probably faster than turning a physical page of a printed book (there is only one more page-turning, unless you choose a small font). The contrast is better than other eReader I’ve seen. There is zero eye strain in a good light. My eyesight is not the greatest, and I like being able to increase the font size and read without glasses. I love being able to browse the Kindle store and read samples before deciding to buy. The “experimental” browser is surprisingly usable, but not great. It is useful for browsing wikipedia and blogs. The main disadvantage browser is awkward cursor navigation using the 5-way pad. It synchronizes your most read page on the Internet so you can pick up where you left off using your iPhone or iPad.

It looked like so:
Kindle Store could use more categories and sorting options. You can not sort on “Top Rated” and there is no category for “alternative histories” for example. Finding a very specific type of fiction based on keyword searches, which does a great job. The wifi sometimes does not connect until it times out. You rarely need wifi, but it is annoying if you change a setting that say “OK” to the quick connect, and the thing tells you that it has failed to connect two seconds later (the exact time it means that it finally did connect, then you need to go back to update mode again). Most options do not require a connection, but it’s a minor annoyance. Most of your time will be spent reading, and of course your books stored on the device and a connection is not required. Part of me wishes I had bought the 3G model, because the browser is good enough to lifetime free wireless 3G will be worth the extra money. Blade does not look good and are not very easy to navigate. There’s less glare in certain lighting conditions, mostly when a lamp is positioned behind the reader’s head.

The bad:
The contrast is fair to poor in low light. It is much easier to read a printed page in dim light. In good light, the contrast level with a mass paperback. In low light it feels almost like reading from an old Palm Pilot (resolution is better than an old Palm, but poorly in low light). The screen is small enough that the incidence of side faces is pretty high.Even in good light, the light gray background less pleasant than the eggshell background of a printed page. You must tell it to sync before switching it off if you expect feature allows you to pick up where you left off using other devices to work properly. The copy protection prevents you from using the files on anything but the Kindle software or equipment.

Vs IPAD:
IPAD is a lot better for magazines, reference materials, and illustrated materials. Kindle is worlds better at reading novels. IPAD is quite heavy, making it difficult to hold in your hand or carry with you everywhere. Kindle is far more portable and easier to maintain.IPAD has some great children’s books and magazines that take advantage of its multimedia functions. IPAD is unreadable in sunlight and glare is bad in bright light.Kindle is as good as a printed page in bright light. IPAD serves as a creative tool, a software tool, a gaming tool, and a communication tool. Kindle is only a novel machine. I do not regret buying one of them. An IPAD will not replace books, but a Kindle, if the book is text only.

I highly recommend this unit for its new low price, if you’re a frequent reader of novels. I love my Kindle. Just do not expect it to be more than it is. Leave the magazines and stuff for tablet PCs.

I woke up to a nice surprise this morning: a new Kindle as a gift. I have an IPAD and a Kindle DX, but I guess someone heard my complaints of them are too heavy and hard to do with extended reading on. Do not get me wrong, I absolutely love my iPad and DX, but this new generation of Kindle is perfect for reading outdoors and for long periods. The iPad will be completely washed out in sunlight and often irritate my eyes stared at it for more than a few hours. DX was my go-to-device for those extended / outdoor reading periods, but now I have a new friend to read novels. Instead of a replacement, this one seems more like a companion to other devices and is a second class. The iPad works fine for web browsing, shopping, productivity, games, etc. while Kindle live in these areas. Kindle works fine for reading novels, where IPAD falls short. For those who love to do extensive reading of magazines, newspapers, research papers, etc I think DX is go-to-device.

Without doubt, the size and weight of the new kindle the biggest draw for me. It is less than the last edition of a substantial margin. I have played around with the Kindle 2, and was impressed, but now look at the size of the new Kindle, I’m blown away. It is the absolute perfect size. Less would be unmanageable and larger will not feel nearly as good. This is a device that you can stop reading and just forget it’s there. Compared to other e-readers I’ve tried, it is much smaller and much lighter.

One of my biggest complaints about the previous generation teeth and DX is the speed. It sometimes takes a while after you press ‘next page’ to actually change. In addition, the web browsing function so slow and clunky that it’s really useless in my opinion. Two additions to the new Kindle has helped alleviate these issues. First, the pages do fold faster (although still slow in my opinion), and the addition of wifi has a faster connection to wireless activities (much better than just rely on 3G). I still can not see myself using Kindle as an Internet browsing tool or really do much online except to buy reading material, but faster connections at least opens the possibility – something that would only prevent me in previous versions.

The new Kindle also offers a better contrast than previous versions and it looks fantastic compared to all other e-reader I’ve seen. I have no problems seeing the screen in low light or in bright sunlight – it really opens up the opportunity to read almost anywhere. Of course, you will still need a separate light to very dark areas.

Another great addition to the Kindle 3 is that it offers double storage compared to Kindle second I’ve never had a problem with the amount of storage space since I can not possibly see myself filling up that much space (I do not put mp3′s on it), but maybe in the future if certain applications or media files are placed on the Kindle, it could have been a problem. The extra space in the new model is certainly a welcome addition, but to bring back the memory card slot, built on Kindle 1 would have been even more welcome addition in my opinion.

Among the e-readers, I definitely recommend the Kindle 3, if not just because it has a better size / form factor, contrast, battery life, and speed relative to all other e-reader, I’ve tried. On top of that you get the wonderful Amazon buying experience and selection for all your literature and can keep your Kindle library intact between any other device you want to download an application onto the Kindle.

Whether you need a Kindle vs. another type of device for reading gets a little trickier and really comes down to what you want to use it for.

Want a device for reading novels, maybe read outside and have something very light that you almost forget it’s there? Buy Kindle.

Want something to lie in bed with for short periods while you surf the web? I suggest going with the iPad, another tablet or netbook.

Already have a Kindle 1 or 2? It’s a tough one …. I do not think the new version has enough ‘new’ to justify the upgrade in my mind, but some may value the new size and wifi capabilities even more, than I do. For me it was new Kindle a welcome addition to my family of devices as I have not anything near its form factor and convenience.

Should you get 3G + Wifi or even Wifi? I think this question can be answered by simply asking yourself if you travel a lot. Being able to buy books and access to wireless content on the road is an indispensable option and worth the extra money in my mind.Hold the device mainly at home or nearby wifi hotspots really negates the need for 3G itself.

All in all, I have to give Kindle a 5 stars because it does what it was designed to do very well, and in my opinion better than any competitor. While new features and capabilities are not game-changing and really excellent, it is smaller, more capable and better than any other e-reader out there. If you want `single device to handle it all ‘, this is not the place to look, but if you want a fantastic device solely for reading books, this is what you want.
