On the whole, even though the Original Kindle and the Kindle 2 share the same matte white color and have the same size display, their keyboards and their navigation buttons are clearly different.  The Kindle 2 is rated a bestseller over the Original Kindle. Battery life of the Original Kindle vs the Kindle 2

The Kindle 2 has a chip for active battery management this is not in the Original Kindle. A Chip will help regulate the charge flow and help make the battery last for two weeks when not in wireless mode, or 4 days when connected wirelessly.  A non removable battery does not require solid casing like the removable kind do, taking up less space.  The Kindle wireless reading device, Kindle 2 battery can be replaced under warranty for a year, but after that time, it can be replaced in the Amazon factory for $59.00.

The non removable battery was used to accommodate the Kindle wireless reading device, Kindle 2thinner size. (0.35 in thick).  Some people prefer the removable/replaceable battery of the Original Kindle.  Kindle 2 has a non replaceable battery.

On the Original Kindle , many users complain that the battery door will come open during use.  Cannot charge via USB.   Kindle 2 : The battery is not replaceable by the  user and can be charged via USB.

The Kindle 2 has 2GB of internal storage (some is used by the OS) but, the SD card slot has been removed so no additional memory can be added.  Amazon’s explanation about the change that all device makers constantly seek to cut down on the cost of materials.  An SD card slot on top of the added built in storage might have cost too much.

On the SD card/battery brouhaha:The Kindle 2 is a better product in both respects.

Original Kindle: Holds up to 200 books in its internal memory.  Has an SD card expansion slot to hold additional books.

Original Kindle:  Large buttons on either side to turn pages.  It is easy to accidentally hit the next page button because of where it is placed.  Low tech scroll wheel for selecting text.  Slightly slanted keys in a querty format.

Kindle 2 : Page turning buttons are still located on either side, but now flex inward to avoid accidental page turns.  Uses new 5-way controller to select and highlight text.

Kindle 2 does have some added features that the Original Kindle does not have.

Text to speech capabilities and turns pages 20% faster than the Original Kindle.

Kindle 2 now has full image zoom and can limit search to the book you are reading.  The Original Kindle does not have these features.
